Synonyms & Word Choice

Stuck on a word? Diglot suggests better English alternatives for the exact word under your cursor — chosen to fit the sentence you’re writing, not a generic list from a thesaurus. Many suggestions come with a quick translation in your own language, so you understand the nuance before you choose.

How to find it

Click on or select a word in your document. A small word-choice popover appears with a ranked list of alternatives. Pick one and it swaps in. You can also ask the Cowriter assistant for better word choices while it’s helping you edit.

What it does

For the word you’re on, Diglot ranks alternatives that actually fit that sentence — with a short note on the nuance and, where available, a translation into your native language. This makes it a fast, low-effort way to pick a sharper word without rewriting a whole sentence.

When you click a suggestion, the swap appears as a reviewable change: the new word in green, the old one crossed out. You accept or reject it — nothing changes silently.

Registers

Suggestions are tagged by tone so you can match your writing:

• Academic — scholarly, formal written style
• Formal — professional style
• Neutral — the default, works anywhere
• Casual — conversational style

You can ask for a specific register; if you don’t, you get neutral suggestions.

Plans and limits

You get a monthly allowance of word lookups, counted across all your documents and reset on the 1st of each month. Looking up the same word in the same sentence again won’t cost another lookup — repeats are cached for a week and don’t count.

Limitations

• One word at a time. Synonyms works on a single word in its sentence. To rewrite a whole phrase or sentence, use Paraphrase instead.
• The translation is a bonus. Not every word or language pair has a native-language gloss available — when it doesn’t, the suggestion still appears, just without the translation.
• If no good alternatives are found, you’ll simply see “no suggestions” rather than an error.

Common questions

How is this different from Paraphrase? Synonyms swaps a single word in context. Paraphrase rewrites a whole sentence or passage. Synonyms is the quick, one-click word-choice tool; Paraphrase is the heavier tool for changing tone or rewording.

Why does a suggestion sometimes have no translation? The native-language translation is an optional extra. If your language pair isn’t supported for a given word, the synonym still shows — just without the translation.

Do repeated lookups use up my allowance? No. Looking up the same word in the same sentence again is free — those results are cached for a week.
